First of all, this is not a musical film or dance movie. This is a magnificent visual feast in which the dance is the main figure as a leading role. Director Levan Akin masterfully matches the symbols and metaphores around the image of dance and hence, ordinary flow of the story of a dance ensemble gains a multi-layered narration langue.
In the movie, metaphorical implications of "folk dance" like nationalism, conservatism and social restrictions crash to image of individual rights, confliction of body&identity and social liberty norms including class conflictions.
Within a similar theme and context, a Belgium movie named "Girl" 2018) dealt with matters of body and identity focusing on the dance. However, Girl mentioned the dance as the expression of depression between the biological body and psychological transformation of an individual in a sensitive and supportive social environment.
Levan Akin, unlike Girl, prefers to indicate confliction of social formation whose cultural codes may be so conservative and subordinative by some regards and individual rights in the context of psychological motivation. (Both of two movies succesfully picture different dimensions of similar matters.)
In addition to nice music design, very charming dance careographies and impactful drama, a striking final scene puts a golden crown on movie's head.

Never before in cinema have I seen a relationship in which I would so genuinely believe. In every word, move, look, gesture of Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) I can see and feel an ordinary young artist struggling with self-identification and experiencing first love.
The idea of portraying gay romance in such a conservative country as Georgia could give the director Levan Akin many reasons to be moralistic and pretentious. Yet the end result is by no means like this. In every scene, every word, it is subtle, naturalistic, thought-provoking without any unnecessary preachiness. Opinions and feelings are conveyed through music and dance, which enables the film to achieve all its purposes in a delicate yet decisive way.
Akin does not portray Georgian society as something evil. As everywhere, there are people who hate, people who do not understand and people who support. 'And Then We Danced' is a meaningful masterpiece made by those who support not only for those who need the support, but also for those who do not understand yet.

I sometimes just find i can't stop thinking   (self diagnosing of course) hahah) that this song is not something i WANT to play but HAVE TO play because it's such a storybook song and i can see it happening as if in slow motion. it just grabs me. what a beautiful song by Brad, like it's a come to life story (though i never lived it) but i can really imagine it! incredible song by Brad Paisley and such a brilliant songwriter/singer/story teller. WOW.

Would really like to see this film here in Berlin, but in original language only. of course with german or english subtitles. Who else wished this would happen with their crush. When they cannot make a film about the ' Battle of Didgori' then they make low-level films about Georgians.

Loved This Movie, wish they'd make a squeal. I was crying a month ago because I watched a movie that reminded me of my puppy and my brown eyed country boy pulled me into a hug and he played this song on his phone and we danced together to it.
